A Guaranteed Annual Income
Author: Philip K. Robins
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483265900
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 357
Book Description
A Guaranteed Annual Income: Evidence from a Social Experiment brings together the first accounting of evidence on the impact of the Seattle/Denver Income-Maintenance Experiments (SIME/DIME) on participating individuals and families. It is based on a selection of papers delivered to policymakers, program administrators, and researchers at a conference held at Orcas Island, Washington, in May 1978. The conference, sponsored by HEW and the State of Washington, represented the first effort to disseminate to a wide audience the findings emerging from early analyses. The book is divided into four parts. Part I presents a general introduction to the experimental design, results, and data. Part II presents the experimental effects on work behavior for various family members, including results on job satisfaction, the demand for childcare on the part of single mothers, and the incorporation of the labor supply results into a simulation of national welfare reform alternatives. Part III discusses the experimental effects on family behavior, including marital stability, psychological effects, and effects on the demand for children (fertility). Part IV contains five studies of how the benefits were used by the families, including effects on migration, education and training, demand for assets, and the use of subsidized housing programs.

Guaranteed Annual Wages
Author: Jack Chernick
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 172
Book Description
Guaranteed Annual Wages was first published in 1945. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. One of the last acts of President Roosevelt was to order a study of the guaranteed annual wage. The question that naturally arises in the mind of every thinking person is--what is the annual wage? What can it do for me? Is it economically feasible? Is it socially desirable? Will it work for the entire industrial structure as well as for individual firms within an industry? Chernick and Hellickson in Guaranteed Annual Wages present an unbiased report showing to what extent the guaranteed annual wage contributes a solution to intermittent employment and indirectly to other forms of unemployment. Labor has followed the initiative of forward looking management in advocating guaranteed annual wages. Economists regard the guaranteed annual wage as a step toward full employment and the mass purchasing power so essential to keep the wheels of industry turning. This book is the first substantial popular treatment of the annual wage in operation -- its effect upon the community, and how it relieves not only the wage earner but the homemaker from worry over the essentials of food, clothing, and shelter. Chernick and Hellickson present the theory that the traditional wage system is obsolete and that, for the well-being of individuals and for society as a whole, it must be supplanted by a wage system that will make the operation of the economy more stable -- and that although the annual wage may not be a perfect system, it deserves a fair trial until something better is conceived.

Evaluating Program Effectiveness
Author: Marc T. Braverman
Publisher: SAGE Publications
ISBN: 1506351581
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 281
Book Description
The book shows how to apply validity concepts when planning and conducting an evaluation, thereby making sure that the evaluation stays true to the purposes for which it was initiated. Marc T. Braverman demonstrates that evaluating with validity means being able to answer the evaluation questions in a way that is useful, accurate, and reflective of the information needed from the evaluation. His approach is practical, with the goal of helping evaluators to conduct high-quality outcome evaluations, and he illustrates concepts with case study examples drawn from studies of intervention effectiveness over many years. The book begins by looking at the ways that validity is conceptualized and the uses to which it is put. Subsequent chapters analyze separate phases of the outcome evaluation process and the critical decisions about design and analysis that are typically required.
