Book Description
Excerpt from A Brief History of Bavaria There have been innumerable scholarly and scientific histories written on Bavaria, in German, and several excellent works on various phases of her remarkable history, and of the vivid personalities which so invade her past, in English. The guide books which are to be found in all her more important towns and cities are very adequate, although of necessity much has to be left untold, owing to their size, and concentrated as they chiefly are on the one place in question. For instance Mr. Headlam's "Nuremberg," a truly significant and exquisite little work, and Miss Frances Gerard's Romance of Ludwig II." (although the latter does contain several interesting details of the unfortunate Monarch's Kingdom, apart from Munich and the curious castles which he built). There are various other works, too, dealing with the stories of Bayreuth, Oberammergau, Munich &c.;but a want has been expressed for a small work which would contain as it were, and concentrate into a small edition, outlines of all these various subjects and places. Ludwig the Second, King of Bavaria (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Clara Tschudi

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 298

Book Description
Excerpt from Ludwig the Second, King of Bavaria Both the Crown Prince and his brother were unusually good-looking, and it was a brilliant sight when the popular and beautiful Queen walked about the streets of Munich, with her handsome boys beside her. Maternal joy and pride shone from her eyes, and the glance of the people was directed with genuine admiration on her and her children. Otto was the one who most resembled his mother. Being, moreover, lighthearted and accessible, he was also the one to whom the prize of beauty was awarded by popular Opinion. Ludwig's beauty was of a more uncommon and intellectual type, a note worthy feature of his face being the large, brilliant, and dark-blue eye. The boys were always dressed each in his particular colour, which the Queen herself had chosen. Otto in red, and Ludwig in blue - the national colours of Bavaria. Not only were Ludwig's clothes blue in tint, but also, as far as was possible, his various other small possessions and necessities; such, for instance, as the binding of his books, his draw ing portfolios, and his volumes of music This hue always continued to be his favourite colour. Book Description
"There have been innumerable scholarly and scientific histories written on Bavaria, in German, and several excellent works on various phases of her remarkable history, and of the vivid personalities which so invade her past, in English. The guide books which are to be found in all her more important towns and cities are very adequate, although of necessity much has to be left untold, owing to their size, and concentrated as they chiefly are on the one place in question. Bavaria is indeed pregnant with an all embracing interest; her cities, towns, villages, mountain ranges and peaks so full of the romance of folk-lore, legend and the eternal tragedies of the past. The very atmosphere in which they exist is potent with an aroma of the most fascinating and awesome periods of the world's external and spiritual developement. Mystery enshrouds the beginnings of all European countries! But in the Southern Germanic lands perhaps, the silence is the most profound. For "there is no beginning in our memory of the Celtic race." One's imagination must make a vast sweep to go back over the peaks of time, one thousand four hundred years before Christ, and even farther still, to the prehistoric period of Bavaria. But we must attempt this momentary vision, for it is only thus that we can trace her upward fluctuations and developement through the long centuries." [...] This wonderful book is a reprint of the original published in 1906. It shows the history of Bavaria including details on special cities like Munich, Bayreuth, Nuremberg, Oberammergau, Augsburg, Rothenburg and several more.

Book Description
Excerpt from History of Germany IT is right for me to say that this volume of the series has been carefully revised by Mr. A. W. Ward, than Whom England can supply no one better fitted to deal with matters of German History of all dates. Mr. Ward must be understood as guaranteeing only the general accuracy of the narrative. In other respects the volume falls under the same rules as its fellows. As I have already said in the Preface to the History of England, this volume, like the others, is strictly the work of its own author, subject only to the requirement of a general agreement in form and treatment with the other volumes of the series.
