The Wall and the Bridge

The Wall and the Bridge PDF Author: Glenn Hubbard
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300259085
Category : Capitalism
Languages : en
Pages : 249

Book Description
An informed argument for an economic policy based on bridges of preparation and adaptation rather than walls of protection and exclusion "When technological change and globalization in recent decades brought frustration over the resulting losses to jobs and communities, there were no guardrails to get these workers back on track. As this compelling book shows, our nation is going to need bridges to help people get through the unavoidable transformations."--Edmund Phelps, 2006 Nobel Laureate in Economics and author of Mass Flourishing Free-market economists often have noted that there are winners and losers in a competitive capitalist world. The question of how to deal with the difficult real-life consequences faced by the losers, however, has largely been ignored. Populist politicians have tried repeatedly to address the issue by creating walls--of both the physical and economic kinds--to insulate communities and keep competition at bay. While recognizing the broad emotional appeal of walls, economist Glenn Hubbard argues that because they delay needed adaptations to the ever-changing world, walls are essentially backward-looking and ultimately destined to fail. Taking Adam Smith's logic to Youngstown, Ohio, as a case study in economic disruption, Hubbard promotes the benefits of an open economy and creating bridges to support people in turbulent times so that they remain engaged and prepared to participate in, and reap the rewards of, a new economic landscape.

Paying the Toll

Paying the Toll PDF Author: Louise Nelson Dyble
Publisher: University of Pennsylvania Press
ISBN: 0812206886
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
Since its opening in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge has become an icon for the beauty and prosperity of the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as a symbol of engineering achievement. Constructing the bridge posed political and financial challenges that were at least as difficult as those faced by the project's builders. To meet these challenges, northern California boosters created a new kind of agency: an autonomous, self-financing special district. The Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District developed into a powerful organization that shaped the politics and government of the Bay Area as much as the bridge shaped its physical development. From the moment of the bridge district's incorporation in 1928, its managers pursued their own agenda. They used all the resources at their disposal to preserve their control over the bridge, cultivating political allies, influencing regional policy, and developing an ambitious public relations program. Undaunted by charges of mismanagement and persistent efforts to turn the bridge (as well as its lucrative tolls) over to the state, the bridge district expanded into mass transportation, taking on ferry and bus operations to ensure its survival to this day. Drawing on previously unavailable archives, Paying the Toll gives us an inside view of the world of high-stakes development, cronyism, and bureaucratic power politics that have surrounded the Golden Gate Bridge since its inception.

Ten One Dollar Bills

Ten One Dollar Bills PDF Author: Thomas Black
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 144976388X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 172

Book Description
Thomas Black is Vice President of Engineering at Fairfield Electric Cooperative in Blythewood, South Carolina. He is a member and deacon at Sandy Level Baptist Church in Blythewood. He is married to Cynthia, a wonderful wife of eighteen years, and stays busy raising two teenagers, Shelley and Jordan. In 2010, he served as the project coordinator for the Gavilan-Patastule Suspended Bridge near the town of Matiguas in Nicaragua. Thomas graduated from the University of South Carolina at Lancaster in 1989 with an Associate in Science, and from Clemson University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He is a registered Professional Engineer with the state of South Carolina. Losing two high school friends in 2009 would cause Thomas Black to reflect back not only on his childhood but on how short life really is. It would cause him to take a fresh look at his own life, at the accomplishments at his job, and ask himself a question: Is this it; is this all there is to lifemoney and daily routines? Then, as he sat at the computer late one night in March of 2010, searching his mind for answers, he fell into a deep sleep. When he awoke, somewhat startled, he quickly realized what had just happenedJesus had given him a life vision. He prayed that night for God to give him another mountain to climb and a physical sign that he was being called out of the boat. The answers to those two questions came, with God not only showing him the mountain and the physical sign he had prayed for but taking him on a faith journey that would change his life forever. Then in September, after venting in an e-mail to his pastor about his unanswered prayers for another church to become involved in the mission project and for the fundraising to end with a miracle that only God could do, God provided answers to both of those prayersthe next night! For Thomas, 2010 would quickly become a spiritual marker. Ten One-Dollar Bills not only tells the story of this incredible journey but reminds us that life is a journey, not a destination, and as with any journey, serving the Lord + loving people = purpose. We are all challenged to get out of the boatmove beyond comfortlove without limitthat is where well discover not only who we truly are, but the bounty of Christ. REVIEW: Read the book from cover to cover. An absolutely amazing and compelling story. The courage you have shown in your walk with the Lord is very inspiring to me. And when reading it, in between tears and joy, all I felt was Gods healing grace. Thank you so much. Ken Frantz

ISBN: 1439653895
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
Pittsburgh's Bridges takes a comprehensive look at the design, construction, and, sometimes, demolition of the bridges that shaped Pittsburgh, ranging from the covered bridges of yesterday to those that define the skyline today. Pittsburgh is the "City of Bridges," and what remarkable bridges they are! The area's challenging topography of deep ravines and mighty rivers - the Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio - set the stage for engineers, architects, and contractors to conquer the terrain with a variety of distinctive spans. Many were designed to be beautiful as well as functional. While other cities may have one signature bridge, Pittsburgh has such a wide variety that no single bridge can represent it.

Book Description
There's Gold Dust in the Air for You! This book is the result of several recent recessions and many years of lean living. Nobody likes recessions and nobody likes lean living-and indeed nobody should like them. For fifteen years I tried to find such a book as this one. During those years of searching the book shelves, I found that there are many books which give various success ideas, but in none of them did I find a set of compact, simple laws for assuring success. Years ago, a salesman used the power of prosperous thinking, although he may not consciously been aware of it. When people asked him, "How's business?" he always gave this standard answer: "Business is wonderful because there's gold dust in the air!" For him it certainly seemed to be so-every contact became a sale. After a while, whenever his name was mentioned, people always said, "Yes, everything he touches turns to gold.
