Staunching refusing to negotiate peace of co-existence, the Grems fight a losing battle. In a last, desperate effort, the lizards capture Prince Kajor and hold him hostage far from any aid or rescue, then prepare to perform a murderous blood sacrifice of the Prince on the battlefield before their enemies. Meanwhile, Marie, a royal messenger, has been charged by Master Enchanter Rothson to carry a plea for help through a mystic gateway to a nearly forgotten demigod.
