A Bouguer Gravity Anomaly Map of Africa

A Bouguer Gravity Anomaly Map of Africa PDF Author: Rolf L. Slettene
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Gravity anomalies
Languages : en
Pages : 38

Book Description
A Bouguer Gravity Anomaly Map of Africa has been compiled using only terrestrial data. The map is a contoured representation of one degree x one degree mean anomaly values. Some one degree x one degree values are computed by conventional or statistical means directly from observed gravity data held at DMAAC in the DOD Gravity Library. The majority of the one degree x one degree values are predicted by geophysical-gravity correlation methods. The anomaly pattern shown on the map is discussed and evaluated with respect to regional and local tectonic and geologic patterns. The entire Bouguer anomaly map is computer generated and drawn by an electronic plotting device. (Author).

The Utility of Regional Gravity and Magnetic Anomaly Maps

The Utility of Regional Gravity and Magnetic Anomaly Maps PDF Author: William J. Hinze
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 480

Book Description
The subjects of the papers that make up the volume vary from the preparation of national maps to examples of the many uses of regional maps. The anomalities that are discussed range in areal dimension from hundreds of kilometers to tons of meters. The majority of the papers illustrate the utility of the maps in mapping structures and lithologic variations wirhin the continenetal crust, the configuration of the crystalline basements rocks, zones of crustal weakness, distribution of extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks and the geometry of sedimentary basins. Most cases are drawn from the United States and Canada, but examples from Europe, Africa, South America and Asia are included.

The History of Geophysics in Southern Africa

The History of Geophysics in Southern Africa PDF Author: Johan H de Beer
Publisher: AFRICAN SUN MeDIA
ISBN: 192068980X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 641

Book Description
Geophysics is a comparatively young science which only evolved as a distinct discipline during the 19th century. However, its phenomena (like earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and lightning) had been objects of fear, curiosity and speculation since ancient times. In this book, Johan de Beer and his research team reveal that geophysical activity in South Africa can be traced back to as early as 1488. This is a truly astonishing revelation which deserves to be firmly entrenched as part of the country?s proud history. The book also discusses the history and formation of South African geophysical institutions that made a huge and seldom acknowledged contribution to the technological development of southern Africa.

Gravity and Magnetic Exploration

Gravity and Magnetic Exploration PDF Author: William J. Hinze
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 0521871018
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 527

Book Description
This combination of textbook and reference manual provides a comprehensive account of gravity and magnetic methods for exploring the subsurface using surface, marine, airborne and satellite measurements. It describes key current topics and techniques, physical properties of rocks and other Earth materials, and digital data analysis methods used to process and interpret anomalies for subsurface information. Each chapter starts with an overview and concludes by listing key concepts to consolidate new learning. An accompanying website presents problem sets and interactive computer-based exercises, providing hands-on experience of processing, modeling and interpreting data. A comprehensive online suite of full-color case histories illustrates the practical utility of modern gravity and magnetic surveys. This is an ideal text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses and reference text for research academics and professional geophysicists. It is a valuable resource for all those interested in petroleum, engineering, mineral, environmental, geological and archeological exploration of the lithosphere.

The West African Orogens and Circum-Atlantic Correlatives

The West African Orogens and Circum-Atlantic Correlatives PDF Author: R.D. Dallmeyer
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642841538
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 846

Book Description
In December, 1987, Project 233 of the International Geological Correlation Pro gram hosted an international conference in Nouakchott, Mauritania. Discussions were focused on the "Tectonothermal Evolution Of The West Mrican Orogens And Circum-Atlantic Terrane Linkages". A wealth of new information was pre sented during the conference, and it was apparent that the time was appropriate to prepare a systematic volume dealing with the geology of northwest Mrica. The present volume is an outgrowth of this conference, but is not merely a compilation of the papers presented in Nouakchott. Instead, it represents a coordinated vol ume designed to present a balanced, comprehensive view of our present under standing of West Mrican geology and potential correlations in other Circum-At lantic Paleozoic orogens. We sincerely appreciate the efforts of all the reviewers whose comments have greatly helped to improve the quality of this volume. We also thank the various contributors for their diligence and perseverance in manuscript preparation. The calibre of the present volume is a reflection of their labor. Fractals and Chaos in Geology and Geophysics

Fractals and Chaos in Geology and Geophysics PDF Author: Donald L. Turcotte
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521567336
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 424

Book Description
The fundamental concepts of fractal geometry and chaotic dynamics, along with the related concepts of multifractals, self-similar time series, wavelets, and self-organized criticality, are introduced in this book, for a broad range of readers interested in complex natural phenomena. Now in a greatly expanded, second edition, this book relates fractals and chaos to a variety of geological and geophysical applications. All concepts are introduced at the lowest possible level of mathematics consistent with their understanding, so that the reader requires only a background in basic physics and mathematics.
