Book Description
Excerpt from A Boston Merchant of 1745: Or Incidents in the Life of James Gibson, a Gentleman Volunteer at the Expedition to Louisburg, Journal of That Siege, Never Before Published in This Country by One of His Descendants This siege continued forty-eight days, and was carried on by undisciplined colonists against a well-trained army, and a fortification strouger than almost any in the world. Of the events of this siege, in which our army gamed a glorious triumph, Mr. Gibson kept a regular Journal, which was published afterward at London, and a copy presented to King George. A notice of this Journal appeared in a contemporary number of the "Gentleman's Magazine," a periodical which has been continued for upward of 200 years. This Journal has never been reprinted in America. After searching through the principal libraries of New England, we are certain that few persons have ever seen it in this country. We have learned of late that societies are seeking to obtain mere extended information respecting this expedition, and therefore give this Journal entire to our readers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Seeds of Discontent
Author: J. Revell Carr
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0802777619
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 402
Book Description
Popularly, the causes of the American Revolution are considered the Stamp Act and other repressive actions by the Crown against its colonies in the years following the French & Indian War. Some see the sources in the outcome of that war, when George III forbade settlement beyond the Alleghenies. J. Revell Carr takes a longer view, and in Seeds of Discontent, he locates the roots of the Revolution a century earlier. In the latter half of the 17th century, tensions between colonists and the Crown were strikingly similar, culminating in the Revolution of 1689. Though subsequent decades were relatively peaceful, the bitterness was not forgotten, and friction began to build throughout the 1720s and 30s, reaching a peak after the famed 1745 battle for Louisbourg, the seemingly impregnable French fortress in Nova Scotia. Won on England's behalf at great cost to the largely American-born strike force, it was given back to France two years later in return for French concessions in the Caribbean-an act that outraged politicians, citizens, and soldiers alike. Bringing to life the two generations that inspired our Founding Fathers, Revell Carr illuminates an eventful century largely ignored by historians.
