This critical edition of Pesiqta Rabbati is based upon manuscripts and the first printed edition; it includes a modern English translation on facing pages. Pesiqta Rabbati contains rabbinic homilies for Jewish holy days adn special Sabbaths and expresses rabbinic, apocalyptic, polemical, messianic and mystical ideas. It displays the unique rabbinic method of scriptural exigesis known as "midrash" and is a work of literature that demonstrates the artful form of the rabbinic homily, which sets forth statements about Jewish thought and rabbinic religious concepts. It also retains some legal material that is at variance with other Jewish legal texts and demonstrates intertextual relations with Christian and other Jewish texts. It has historical references relating to events in the Land of Israel under the Romans and to the cultural milieu of the era, as well as to the Byzantines at the cusp of the Islamic conquest.

Throughout the long history of Judaism, many individuals and groups have sought to wield authority on the basis of unique religious, social, familial, military, or political claims. Moving historically from the biblical period to the modern-day State of Israel, Authority and Dissent in Jewish Life discusses a range of those claims to authority from within the Jewish community itself. It is about the Land according to the redefined Judaism that emerged in the centuries following the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 CE.
