Not illustrated. 1866 edition. Excerpt: ... little chamber next the new chamber, the maiden's chamber, the wainscot chamber, and a great many more. There was a kitchen, a buttery, a pastry-house, a dry larder, a wet larder, a store-house, a brew-house, a bake-house, an armoury-house, and porter's lodge. It was elaborately furnished; for instance, in the parlour there was a long table and a frame, one table and a square frame, one livery cupboard, three green carpets, two green cloth chairs, one black wrought velvet chair, laid with silver and gold lace, three long cushions of red satin, laid with gold lace, thirteen green cloth stools, six leather stools, one cushion of Turkey Work. In my lady's chamber there were hangings of dornex, a folding bedstead covered with green cloth and laid with watchet lace, surmounted with eight plumes of feathers, two chairs, and two little green stools. Such are specimens of the manner in which great houses were furnished in the reign of Elizabeth. Such was the great house at Wadley in 1572. Then this neighbourhood was honoured by a visit from the Virgin Queen, Queen Elizabeth, of glorious memory. She came to Wadley in July, 1574, and no doubt on that occasion there were great rejoicings. Then, probably, all the neighbouring gentry would hasten to do her honour. The Knollys, of Stanford; the Yates, of Buckland; the Puseys, of Pusey; the Fettiplaces, of Childrey; the Hydes, of Denchworth; the Ayshcombes, of Lyford; the Packers, of Shellingford, would come, mounted and attended, to many a hunting and hawking party, to many a masque and pageant, in order to do honour to the Queen. In the train of Sir Francis Knollys, or his son, might very well have been found a Giles Gosling and a Mike Lambourne, for Goslings and Lambournes and Varneys are names that...

ISBN:

Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This little compendium includes two works of remarkable interest to social historians and residents of the Vale of White Horse, an area once in Berkshire and now re- classified as Oxfordshire. At a time of rapid change in the English countryside, local curate Reverend Lewin G. Maine sought to record for posterity rural people's recollections of a lost way of life. Part one, "A Berkshire Village: its history and antiquities" (1866), is his collection of memories and true tales from the villages of the Vale which has charmed generations of readers. Part two, "The Scouring of the White Horse" (1859), is author Thomas Hughes' way of recording the very last "Pastime", the festival accompanying the 1857 ceremony of cleaning the ancient chalk horse depicted in the turf at Uffington. As well as giving a full account of the history and sports of the Pastime, Hughes' novel also records a time when cows were milked by hand, cheeses made on the farm, and the journey to market was by pony and trap. Part three contains a wealth of information for family-history researchers.

The Stripping of the Altars

The Stripping of the Altars PDF Author: Eamon Duffy
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300197764
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 772

Book Description
This prize-winning account of the pre-Reformation church recreates lay people’s experience of religion in fifteenth-century England. Eamon Duffy shows that late medieval Catholicism was neither decadent nor decayed, but was a strong and vigorous tradition, and that the Reformation represented a violent rupture from a popular and theologically respectable religious system. For this edition, Duffy has written a new Preface reflecting on recent developments in our understanding of the period. From reviews of the first edition: “A magnificent scholarly achievement [and] a compelling read.”—Patricia Morrison, Financial Times “Deeply imaginative, movingly written, and splendidly illustrated. . . . Duffy’s analysis . . . carries conviction.”—Maurice Keen, New York Review of Books “This book will afford enjoyment and enlightenment to layman and specialist alike.”—Peter Heath, Times Literary Supplement “[An] astonishing and magnificent piece of work.”—Edward T. Oakes, Commonweal
