Book Description
420 members of the aviation cadet class of 52-Charlie received their wings in May of 1952. Some transitioned into jet fighters, some into multi-engine aircraft. Most members of this famous class flew combat missions in Korea or Vietnam, or both. Their stories, recounted within, are stories of bravery and sacrifice, and are sometimes tragic, often humorous, and always dedicated. Quinn Fuller was shot down on his first combat mission. Wounded and bleeding, he was picked up by a chopper under heavy fire. He returned to his base and flew an additional ninety-nine missions. Dick Spaulding's oxygen system failed and he was forced to fly for more than thirty minutes over North Korea while slipping in and out of consciousness. Ralph Mackey, a bombardier and later a member of 52-Charlie, watched from another aircraft as his crew was shot down over Germany in WWII. General Jim McDivitt defied death in Korea and again at Edwards Air Force Base as a test pilot, before donning a space suit and flying missions in the Gemini and Apollo programs.

Category : Biography & Autobiography

Pages : 184

Book Description
Luis A. Rivera saw NYPD as larger-than-life while growing up in the South Bronx in the late 1960s and 1970s. From the time he was seven years old, he dream to become one of them. As a kid, he’d sneak a quick peek through the closed curtains just to see the arriving police cars—the old green, black, and white ones with a siren that seemed to go on forever. He’d notice the big Irish cops getting out of their police cars, with their hats on and nightsticks under their arms. In 1989, he was accepted into the New York City Police Academy. Soon, he was hitting the books and navigating shooting range qualifications. The courses were intense. As he achieved his dream, he soon realized the NYPD was not the Boy Scouts, and how unforgiving the police department can be. In this memoir, we look back at how it was like to be a rookie cop with it’s ups and downs in an officer’s career.

Baseball Ratings

Baseball Ratings PDF Author: Charles F. Faber
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476620644
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 303

Book Description
In this third edition of Baseball Ratings, author Charles Faber combines the second edition ("great fodder for arguments"--Booklist) with his book on 19th-century greats, Baseball Pioneers ("very impressive"--Reference and User Services Quarterly; "a notable and ... worthwhile addition"--ARBA), updating the ratings and expanding the commentary in each. The result, Baseball Ratings: The All-Time Best Players at Each Position, 1876 to the Present, is that rarest of rankings books--a time-tested, comprehensive reference work that invites reading. Batters, fielders and pitchers from all major leagues since 1876 are ranked by position and, for pitchers, according to role (e.g., starter, middle reliever, closer) according to career, peak, and per-season achievement. All big league players with at least five years of eligibility are rated, and appendices identify underrated and overrated players, rate multiposition players, and sort the great by handedness.
