Shifting Gears at 50

Shifting Gears at 50 PDF Author: Philip Buonpastore
Publisher: Fox Chapel Publishing
ISBN: 1937049760
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
From the publishers of Motorcycle Consumer News, Shifting Gears at 50 is a one-of-a-kind motorcycling manual for returning and late-entry riders, essentially anyone 40 years old and up who's looking to hit the road on two wheels. Author Philip Buonpastore, a motorcycle journalist and retired US Air Force photographer, helps readers gear up to get back on a motorcycle (or get on one for the first time). In Part 1, "Becoming a Motorcyclist," Buonpastore discusses the basics of buying the right bike, gear, and equipment and getting the bike up to speed. The book continues with a good overview of learning to ride, the importance of taking a road course, venturing out on the first ride, and extending rides to long-distance jaunts. Throughout Part 1 are sidebars by riding- safety instructor and expert Walt Fulton, offering sound advice on safety precautions and execution for every leg of the new and returning rider's journey. The author emphasizes what older riders should be aware of and which factors can affect their rides. Adding lots of great firsthand advice are humorous and helpful stories collected by the author and related by returning riders at various ages, from their late 30s to 60s.In Part 2, Buonpastore shares five of his favorite travelogues covering his long-distance tours around the US, from the American South to the west coasts. This section is illustrated by over 100 of the author's breathtaking photographs of the various locations he toured on his bike. The foreword to the book is provided by best-selling motorcycle author David Hough (author of I-5 Press's Proficient Motorcycling and Mastering the Ride). Hough writes, "If you're getting into today's motorcycling at an age your doctor would describe as ‘middle aged' or ‘senior,' do you yourself a clever favor and read Phil's book."

Seventy Years on a Motorcycle

Seventy Years on a Motorcycle PDF Author: Herbert Foster Gunnison
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 9781401056698
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
No comments on Gunnison's work are complete if they don't zero in on his style, which is lively, engaging, and moves through complex interrelated ideas with grace and ease. His passions for life and faith in the sublime are truly refreshing and there are quotable gems galore: "motorcycles are the truth about speed" and "love is a conspiracy against the ordinary" are typical. When Herb is sufficiently provoked he grabs a sledgehammer from the arsenal of his intellect as in the following rejoinder to the news that atomic scientists think nuclear explosions are "beautiful" beautiful my ass that's my philosophy When appropriate , Herb can be lyrical. "Oh how I love to ride on drizzly summer days tucked in behind a misty windscreen, insulated from the moist wind chill by a rainsuit, listening to the song of a perfectly tuned engine, absorbed in the rush of my solitary world lonely unassailable, aching with day long joy as I watch the earth renew its sweet mysterious self around me." The word is coming in over and over that this book is an absorbing read. This is not to say it is lacking in serious cultural or personal psychological issues. Herb makes an inspired case for the distractive and self-deadening results of excessive worship of technology in the popular culture. Two attempts to break the coast-to-coast speed record on a motorcycle to celebrate his 45th birthday and 7500 mile motorcycle journey around the U.S. to celebrate his 75th birthday becomes frames and metaphors. Beneath all the excitement Gunnison is burdened with deep psychological problems. He was the third generation offspring of an extraordinarily wealthy lineage. His father, uncle and grandfather were all multi-millionaires. Herb's identity problems set in during adolescence when he got the idea that he was expected to WOW the crowd after three impossible acts to follow. For seventy years he sublimated his identity problem on fast road and dirt bikes and early indication are (Thank God!) that this book fortunately is about to bring him full circle because motorcyclists are gobbling it up and sooner or later the Holier than Thou Group is going to ruefully admit that the motorcyclists they look down on are living in Paradise. Every purchase of this book. Is a vote for our respectability.

The Art of the Racing Motorcycle PDF Author: Phillip Tooth
Publisher: Rizzoli Publications
ISBN: 0789322137
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
A lavishly illustrated and definitive look at the design evolution of the racing motorcycle. The dynamic between competition and design has always fueled the evolution of racing motorcycles and inspired astonishing feats of design and engineering. This book traces the development of the sport bike, from the earliest French motorcycles to the dominance of British machinery in the 1930s, the exotic Italian motorcycles of the 1950s and 1960s, the influence of American racing in the 1970s and 1980s, and today’s Japanese superbikes. More than fifty classic motorcycles—from Harley-Davidsons to Peugeots, Velocettes, Moto Guzzis, BMWs, Kawasakis, and Ducatis—are presented chronologically illustrated with stunning studio photographs that present the machines as works of art and wonders of design in themselves, accompanied by rare and beautiful archival images that place the subjects in the contexts of classic races, rallies, and motorcycle shows, and accompanied by essays revealing the legends behind the machines. Some of the championship motorcycles featured include the 1902 Manon, the 1922 Harley Davidson 8-valve, the 1935 Terrot 500, the 1948 AJS Porcupine, the 1954 Moto Guzzi V8, the 1965 Honda GP 250, The 1976 Suzuki RK67, the 1986 Cagiva GP, and the 1990 Ducati Supermono.
