Book Description
This book is abridged from the 1886 edition published in London. It is the page turning autobiography of one Charles Chiniquy who was born in Quebec and raised as a Roman Catholic. He became a priest and served as such for 25 or so years. Everywhere he served (various parishes, a hospital, a monastary, Canada, U.S., etc...) he found SIGNIFICANT corruption in Romanism. Ninety plus percent of the priests and bishops were constantly drunk, sleeping with women, involved in sexual affairs with their own close relatives, involved in theft, simony, and all sorts of evil behaviors. Some even murdered others. Chiniquy fought with these bishops and others over the purity of the "church" until eventually he figured out that the Roman Catholic church was not the church of Jesus Christ. At that point, he resigned with most of his congregation (of thousands) from Romanism to form their own independent church. Later, they joined the Presbyterians. In the 1850s, Chiniquy hired Abraham Lincoln to defend him against some corrupt priests and bishops. Lincoln helped him win the day twice. The book claims to prove that the Jesuits were behind the initiation of the U.S. Civil War and Lincoln's assasination. After reading Chiniquy's work, even skeptics may believe that he is probably correct about this or at the very least that they (the Jesuits) contributed significantly to the Civil War and to Lincoln's demise. Protestants and Catholics alike should read this work. It is excellent.

Book Description
Charles Chiniquy was born in Kamouraska, Quebec, Canada of Roman Catholic parents. He studied at the college of Nicolet in Canada and entered the priesthood after graduation. At the age of 49 he left the Catholic Church (taking his congregation with him) and became a Presbyterian minister. His encounters with the inner workings of the Roman Church are so enlightening that it could only come from someone who was embedded in such a system for so many years. He later published a number of books and tracts on temperance as well as about his life and experiences in the Church. Several of these were so popular that they were translated into multiple languages. In Fifty Years in the Church of Rome, he covers such topics as: - The Bible and the Priest of Rome - Preparation for the First Communion- Initiation to Idolatry - Intellectual Education in the Roman Catholic College - Moral and Religious Instruction in the Roman Catholic Colleges - Protestant Children in the Convents and Nunneries of Rome - Rome and Education: Why the Church of Rome hates and wants to destroy the Common Schools of the United States - Theology of the Church of Rome: Its Antichristian Character - The Vow of Celibacy - The Impurities of the Theology of Rome - The Priests of Rome and the Holy Fathers - How I swore to give up the Word of God to follow the Word of Men - The Roman Catholic Priesthood, or Ancient and Modern Idolatry - Nine Consequences of the Dogma of Transubstantiation - The Old Paganism under a Christian Name - Simony - Strange and Sacrilegious Traffic in the so-called Body and Blood of Christ - Enormous Sums of Money made by the Sale of Masses - Conversions of Protestants to the Church of Rome - How the Priests Spy on the Protestants Through the Confessional - And Much More!

Book Description
Fifty Years in the Church of Rome is a book written by Father Charles Chiniquy. Chiniquy was a catholic priest born in Quebec, Canada and this book, his autobiography, is one of the best selling books in Canadian history. Chiniquy's book tells the story of the author's involvement in the Catholic Church, beginning with scenes of a little boy memorizing passages from the Bible. Chiniquy so loved the words of Jesus that he dedicated his life to the scriptures and became a Catholic priest. While serving as a priest, Chiniquy grew increasingly disillusioned with the institution of Catholicism and disgusted with many of the other men that served as priests. Chiniquy tells tales of the alcoholism, womanizing, and abuse that was common amongst other priests. The book discusses Chiniquy's split with Catholicism, excommunication from the church, and eventual rebirth as a Presbyterian pastor. The book also details Chiniquy's relationship with a young lawyer named Abraham Lincoln, and the author's hypothesis that the Jesuits were responsible for his assassination. Fifty Years in the Church of Rome is a fascinating account of life in the Catholic church. A controversial book since the day it was published, Chiniquy's work is not an unfair or biased account of Catholicism. It is clear that the author still holds Catholicism in high regard, however was simply unable to overlook the misdoings of other religious men within the Church. This book holds historical significance, as it brought to light many controversies that still dog the Catholic Church many years later. Readers interested in Catholicism and the religious path of a former priest will find this to be a highly engrossing book. Touching and ripe with emotion, Chiniquy's work was a sensation upon its original publication and remains a highly important work to this day. Fifty Years in the Church of Rome is highly recommended.
