History of the 43rd and 52nd (Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire) Light Infantry
Author: Captain J. E. H. Neville
Publisher: Andrews UK Limited
ISBN: 1781499519
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 512
Book Description
Today's British soldiers serving in Iraq will know the country in which much of this unit history is set - the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers known in the Great War as Mesopotamia. Unusually for such a work of record, the author lays down the background to the Great War in the Middle East in some detail - stressing such factors as the German-Turkish alliance; the building of the Berlin to Baghdad railway and Britain's interest in the Persian ( Iranian) oilfields. He also reports events with a topical resonance today - such as anti-British riots in Basra, and the declaration of a ‘JIhad’. The 43rd took part in the defeat of the Turks at Khan Baghdadi, and after the armistice in the spring of 1919 was re-deployed to Archangel in northern Russia in an effort to nip the Bolshevik revoloution in the bud. Under the command of General Sir Edmund ‘Tiny’ Ironside the 43rd battled gallantly against Bolshevik forces, although beset by flies, mosquitoes, bloodsucking ticks called clegs - and their unreliable White Russian allies. At last, partly through lack of progress and partly due to political pressure against an un popular foreign adventure - another echo of today- the unit was withdrawn in the autumn of 1919. An intriguing and unusual account of two little-known camapigns with eerily prophetic echoes of events in Iraq today.

Author: William M. Kennedy
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 142690438X
Category : World War, 1939-1945
Languages : en
Pages : 435
Book Description
This is a journal spanning from October 30, 1942 to October 29th 1945 through which the author recounts his days abroad serving in the U.S. Army during WWII. Kennedy begins his memoir by admitting to a reluctance toward fighting in the war before bringing readers down a path fraught with detailed descriptions of life aboard a warship and in various countries around the world. Whether describing the war-littered desert streets of Tobruk, Africa, the grandeur of Rome, or the breathtaking sight of Capri, Italy, the author places readers deep into his penetrating remembrances. Kennedy's forthright honesty and unique experiences will give readers insight into the harsh realities of being away from home – and a new wife – for three years, as well as an insight into the bonds of friendship and camaraderie that result from soldiers serving together. The pictures not only add a personal touch to an already moving memoir, but help readers match faces with the colorful characters about whom Kennedy writes.

Book Description
Formed in 1801 to protect sea captains against attack from the British navy and Barbary Pirates, the Providence Marine Corps of Artillery remains one of the most famed regiments in the U.S. Army. It distinguished itself during the War of 1812, the Dorr Rebellion, and in nearly every major engagement of the Civil War. After assuming the identity of the 103d Field Artillery Regiment of the Rhode Island National Guard, the unit battled amid the carnage of the Western Front in World War I, fought the enemy in the mosquito- infested South Pacific islands during World War II, and weathered the scorching deserts of Iraq in the twenty-first century. Based on extensive primary research and interviews with veterans of the corps, this narrative offers an insider's look at the illustrious regiment in its first full history.

Book Description
Sometimes the hardest thing for a cop to do is the right thing. A black city councilman is badly beaten on a West Philadelphia street and blames two of Sgt. Eddie North's best cops. They deny it. Eddie, uncertain of what really happened, decides to back his men—and finds himself accused of a conspiracy to cover up the truth. The media, the politicians and the public are outraged. And then a man in a black ski mask begins a campaign to assassinate cops. As Eddie races to learn what was really behind the beating, there's even more trouble. A fellow sergeant has taken advantage of the confusion in the city and formed a ring of corrupt officers—including one of the two cops Eddie is risking his career for. The widening conflict between the police and the black community is mirrored by the battle of cop against cop. And with the stakes so high, there are no winners—just those strong enough, and lucky enough, to survive.

Operation Bagration, 23 June-29 August 1944
Author:
Publisher: Helion
ISBN: 1912174553
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 535
Book Description
The Rout of the German-Fascist Troops in Belorussia in 1944 covers the Red Army's Belorussian strategic operation: the linchpin of the 10 major Soviet offensive efforts launched that year to clear the country of the invader. During the course of this operation, the German position along the western strategic direction was destroyed and the stage was set for an advance into Poland and Germany. The success of this operation also set the stage for the Red Army's subsequent advance into the Baltic and South-Eastern Europe. Like most works generated by the General Staff, the Belorussian study divides the operation into two parts: preparation and conduct. The first deals with the massive efforts by the First Baltic and the First, Second and Third Belorussian Fronts to accumulate the men and materiel to break through the German defenses in the swampy and forested terrain of Belorussia. This section contains valuable information on the overall correlation of forces, equipment and troops' densities along the breakthrough sectors and Soviet plans for supplying the offensive, as well as detailed information regarding the employment of the various combat arms. The second part deals with the actual conduct of the several front operations that comprised the overall effort. This section covers the initial breakthrough battles and the encirclement of the Vitebsk and Bobruisk garrisons, followed by the capture of Minsk and the encirclement of sizeable German forces east of the city. The narrative then continues with the follow-on operations to cut off German forces in the Baltic States and to seize crossings over the Vistula River in Eastern Poland. Compiled and written by professional staff officers, this study provides a detailed look at the conduct of one of the major operations of the Second World War. This latest work, along with other studies in this series, offers another insight into the Red Army's conduct of the war at the operational-strategic level.
