Book Description
The concept of 3D videophone is proposed to realise video communication that is closer to natural face- to-face conversation. Human visual interface evaluations are conducted to confirm the display choice for the visual information presentation and the suitable terminal configuration for the system core hardware. The results show that 3D display is preferred over the conventional 2D display as the visual information representation actuator due to closeness to natural face-to-face conversation. On the other hand, a laptop PC type terminal is chosen as the 3D videophone core hardware since sufficient level of eye contact can be maintained during video communication. Evaluation of the degradation and delay of audio and 3D visual signals due to ATM network impairments is performed to verify the suitability of ATM network for handling the transmission of 3D videophone signals. The effects of the impairments are evaluated by comparison between unimpaired and impaired signals. The results demonstrate that ATM network impairments effects at the ITU-T ATM performance objective values on the signals still able to maintain good quality of 3D video.

Communication in the Age of Virtual Reality

Communication in the Age of Virtual Reality PDF Author: Frank Biocca
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN:
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 418

Book Description
This volume addresses virtual reality (VR) -- a tantalizing communication medium whose essence challenges our most deeply held notions of what communication is or can be. The editors have gathered an expert team of engineers, social scientists, and cultural theorists for the first extensive treatment of human communication in this exciting medium. The first part introduces the reader to VR's state-of-the-art as well as future trends. In the next section, leading research scientists discuss how knowledge of communication can be used to build more effective and exciting communication applications of virtual reality. Looking ahead, the authors explore pioneering approaches to VR narratives, interpersonal communication, the use of 3D sound, and the building of VR entertainment complexes. In the final section, the authors zoom out to view the big picture -- the psychological, social, and cultural implications of virtual reality. Thought-provoking discussions consider important communication issues such as: * How will virtual reality influence perception of reality? * What are the legal issues defining communication in virtual reality? * What kind of cultural trends will this technology encourage?

Immersive Communication

Immersive Communication PDF Author: Qin Li
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780429355530
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
"Communication, like the atmosphere itself, is ubiquitous and essential for humans and with the development of new technologies, such as wireless internet, 3D printing and virtual reality, it has become almost impossible to live without it. In addition, means of communication have changed immeasurably. This book proposes a new research paradigm that incorporates new features and factors of communication and a new theoretical framework named "immersive communication". Pointing out that communication today has moved beyond the bi-directional, mass communication of "the second media age" to ubiquitous, immersive communication in "the third media age", the author discusses the definition, characteristics, information structure, and models of immersive communication using various examples including Fitbit, Apple, 4G and other technologies, while envisioning future applications of the immersive communication model. Scholars and students of communication studies, especially those interested in the manifestations of the new media age, will all benefit from this book. It will also appeal to readers interested in new media and communication theories"--

Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 452

Book Description
The national information infrastructure (NII) holds the promise of connecting people of all ages and descriptionsâ€"bringing them opportunities to interact with businesses, government agencies, entertainment sources, and social networks. Whether the NII fulfills this promise for everyone depends largely on interfacesâ€"technologies by which people communicate with the computing systems of the NII. More Than Screen Deep addresses how to ensure NII access for every citizen, regardless of age, physical ability, race/ethnicity, education, ability, cognitive style, or economic level. This thoughtful document explores current issues and prioritizes research directions in creating interface technologies that accommodate every citizen's needs. The committee provides an overview of NII users, tasks, and environments and identifies the desired characteristics in every-citizen interfaces, from power and efficiency to an element of fun. The book explores: Technological advances that allow a person to communicate with a computer system. Methods for designing, evaluating, and improving interfaces to increase their ultimate utility to all people. Theories of communication and collaboration as they affect person-computer interactions and person-person interactions through the NII. Development of agents: intelligent computer systems that "understand" the user's needs and find the solutions. Offering data, examples, and expert commentary, More Than Screen Deep charts a path toward enabling the broadest-possible spectrum of citizens to interact easily and effectively with the NII. This volume will be important to policymakers, information system designers and engineers, human factors professionals, and advocates for special populations.
