Under the Red Banner
Author: Elvira Grözinger
Publisher: Otto Harrassowitz Verlag
ISBN: 9783447058087
Category : Communism and culture
Languages : en
Pages : 274
Book Description
The majority of European Yiddish speaking Jews was murdered by Hitler's National Socialists, their cultural realm was destroyed. After the war, the Communist regimes suppressed Jewish culture, but despite emigration of Jewish survivors, small Jewish communities continued to exist and made efforts to revive their culture in most of the Communist countries. Jewish organizations, clubs, cultural societies and theatres were founded, and a great number of Yiddish books, newspapers and periodicals were printed, despite political pressure, hostility and persecution. The cultural activity which developed "under the red banner" cannot of course be compared to the immense impact the Yiddish culture experienced before the Second World War but it was an important phenomenon in Jewish history which remained uninvestigated for a long time and has not been described in a proper way until today. This volume of seventeen essays is a collection of papers delivered by scholars from the USA, Sweden, Israel, Germany and Poland at the conference on Yiddish Culture in the Communists Countries in the Postwar Era which was organized at the Jagiellonian University Cracow in cooperation with the University of Potsdam in November 2006.

Essays on Life Sciences, with Related Science Fiction Stories
Author: Pier Luigi Luisi
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527544796
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 251
Book Description
This collection of essays highlights, in a new, critical fashion, some of the classic questions in life science. These include “what is life?”; “what is death?”; “what is consciousness?”; “why is life cellular?”; and “why are enzymes macromolecules?”. It also explores whether evolution is pre-determined, whether science and spirituality can harmonize with each other, whether artificial intelligence is at odds with the human spirit, and whether, and to what extent, we are genetically determined. In this text, some of the main conceptual tools used to tackle life’s many aspects are necessarily reviewed, such as the systems view of life, the notion of contingency, and the concept of autopoiesis. Each of the three chapters of the book contains a number of short science fiction stories which discuss aspects of the present-day development of artificial intelligence.

Book Description
Daphne du Maurier: Writing, Identity and the Gothic Imagination is the first full-length evaluation of du Maurier's fiction and the first critical study of du Maurier as a Gothic writer. Horner and Zlosnik argue that the fears at the heart of du Maurier's Gothic fictions reflect both personal and broader cultural anxieties concerning sexual and social identity. Using the most recent work in Gothic and gender studies they enter the current debate on the nature of Female Gothic and raise questions about du Maurier's relationship to such a tradition.

Adapting Stephen King
Author: Joseph Maddrey
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476648212
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 229
Book Description
Stephen King's fiction has formed the basis of more motion picture adaptations than any other living author. His earliest short stories, collected in the Night Shift anthology, have been adapted into hit features including Creepshow, Children of the Corn, Cat's Eye, Maximum Overdrive, Graveyard Shift, Sometimes They Come Back, and The Mangler. Through his "Dollar Baby" program, King licensed several Night Shift stories to aspiring filmmakers for just one dollar each, resulting in numerous student film adaptations. This book critically examines and contextualizes adaptations of the Night Shift short stories, from big box office features to relatively unknown student films. It illuminates how each film is a uniquely and intricately collaborative endeavor, and charts the development of each adaptation from first option to final cut. Through old and new interviews with the creators, the work explores how filmmakers continue to reinvent, reimagine, remake and reboot King's stories.

Contemporary Gender Formations in India
Author: Nandini Dhar
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1003818234
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 367
Book Description
The volume discusses critical issues surrounding the developments in gender movements in the last two decades in India following the Delhi rape case and the ensuing massive protests in December 2012. A critical documentation of some of the key moments surrounding the contemporary gendered formations and radicalisms in South Asia, the chapters span questions of class, caste, sexuality, digital feminisms, and conflict zones. The book looks at anger, protest, and imaginations of resistance. It showcases the ‘new’ visibility that digital spaces have opened up to lend voice to survivors who are let down by traditional justice mechanisms and raises questions regarding ‘individualized’ modes of seeking justice as against traditional ‘collective’ voices that have always been a hallmark of movements. The volume analyses and criticizes the complicity of the state and the court as agents of reinforcing gender violence – an issue that has not been theorized enough by activists and scholars of violence. Further, it also delves into the #MeToo movement and the LoSHA, as both have raised contentious, controversial, and often conflicting debates on the nature of addressing sexual harassment, particularly at the workplace. Calling for further debate and discussions of cyberspace, gender justice, sexual violence, male entitlement, and forms of neoliberal feminism, this volume will be of immense interest to scholars and researchers in the areas of women and gender studies, sociology and social theory, gender politics, political theory, democracy, protest movements, politics, media and the internet, political advocacy, and law and legal theory. It will also be a compelling read for anyone interested in gender justice and equal rights.
