This study is an analysis of the close support artillery battalion in the Light Infantry Division (LID) and it's relationship with the maneuver brigade. There is currently a debate over whether the maneuver brigade should have an organic artillery battalion or the traditional direct support artillery battalion. Recent studies such as ARMY 21 and MOC 96 (Maneuver Oriented Corps) suggest organic artillery battalions are the best organization for the future battlefield. In addition recent experience at the National Training Center indicate in general that maneuver-fire support team relationships have some serious weaknesses. One solution in correcting these problems and organizing units for the future battlefield is organic artillery battalions in the maneuver brigades to include the brigades of the LID. In order to determine if the maneuver brigades should have organic artillery battalions in the LID this paper examines the LID, its unique missions, capabilities and limitations, and its unique light infantry characteristics. Also considered are historical examples of U.S. and German light divisions in WWII, U.S. infantry divisions in Vietnam and the contemporary British light contingency force. The analysis includes an examination of the employment of close support artillery in these historical examples using the fire support doctrinal tenets of adequacy, flexibility and continuity. Technological improvements in field artillery systems are also considered as they relate to a potential need for a change in the artillery battalion-maneuver brigade relationship. Finally, the organic and direct support options are examined using four principles of war: offense, mass, economy of force and unity of effort.

If conventional Mid- or High-Intensity war were to occur in central Europe, the United States would face an enemy bringing to the battlefield a massive quantitive superiority in artillery. The monograph examines the role of artillery on the battlefield and where it achieves the greatest payoff. The monograph first examines the historical underpinnings of artillery doctrine for both the United States and the Soviet Union. It then turns to a review of the current doctrine and attack methodologies for both nations. It attempts to extend from the historical trends the basis of current doctrine. The study then conducts a case study applying the current doctrine in order to determine the ability of the United States forces to counter the Soviet threat using different artillery force combinations available to the maneuver brigade commander. Upon completion of the case study, an evaluation of the presented material is conducted. The monograph concludes that to attack it with anything but all available forces risks defeat of the entire force. The study also concludes that there are weaknesses associated with the mass artillery Soviet tactics. Those weaknesses can be attacked. This will upset the rhythm of the Soviet attack and will then free friendly artillery to conduct close support for maneuver forces.

The purpose of the overall research program was to document the synchronization required by command and control tasks performed within the armored brigade, to include combat support and combat service support units. The immediate application of the documentation was to support developers of staff training in two related projects: Battle Staff Training System and Staff Group Trainer. The documentation was also intended to assist with the planning and execution of collective training. The documentation approach was to apply function analysis (FA) techniques for battlefield function (BFs) in the Command and Control battlefield operating system. Thirteen FAs were developed for the brigade headquarters and four supporting units: direct support field artillery battalion, engineer battalion, forward support battalion, and air defense artillery battery. The FAs were revised through a formative evaluation process that included internal review and successive external reviews by combat training centers, proponent agencies, and a review council representing potential users of the FAs. The final products include the FAs, a use's guide, and assessment packages for the BFs. This report provides the assessment package for BF 19 as performed by the direct support field artillery battalion.
