The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition and Language Testing

The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition and Language Testing PDF Author: Paula Winke
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351034774
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 543

Book Description
This Handbook, with 45 chapters written by the world’s leading scholars in second language acquisition (SLA) and language testing, dives into the important interface between SLA and language testing: shared ground where researchers seek to measure second language performance to better understand how people learn their second languages. The Handbook also reviews how to best measure and evaluate the second language (L2) learners’ personal characteristics, backgrounds, and learning contexts to better understand their L2 learning trajectories. Taking a transdisciplinary approach to research, the book builds upon recent theorizing and measurement principles from the fields of applied linguistics, cognitive science, psychology, psycholinguistics, psychometrics, educational measurement, and social psychology. The Handbook is divided into six key sections: (1) Assessment concepts for SLA researchers, (2) Building instruments for SLA research, (3) Measuring individual differences, (4) Measuring language development, (5) Testing specific populations, and (6) Measurement principles for SLA researchers.

Formulaic Sequences

Formulaic Sequences PDF Author: Norbert Schmitt
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9781588115003
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 324

Book Description
Formulaic sequences (FS) are now recognized as an essential element of language use. However, research on FS has generally been limited to a focus on description, or on the place of FS in L1 acquisition. This volume opens new directions in FS research, concentrating on how FS are acquired and processed by the mind, both in the L1 and L2. The ten original studies in the volume illustrate the L2 acquisition of FS, the relationship between L1 and L2 FS, the relationship between corpus recurrence of FS and their psycholinguistic reality, the processes involved in reading FS, and pedagogical issues in teaching FS. The studies use a wide range of methodologies, many of them innovative, and thus the volume serves as a model for future research in the area. The volume begins with three survey chapters offering a background on the characteristics and measurement of FS.

Teaching and Researching: Speaking

Teaching and Researching: Speaking PDF Author: Rebecca Hughes
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317862759
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 172

Book Description
Speaking is a dynamic, interpersonal process and one that strongly influences how we are perceived by others in a range of formal and everyday contexts. Despite this, speaking is often researched and taught as if it is simply writing delivered in a different mode. In Teaching and Researching Speaking, Rebecca Hughes suggests that we have less understanding than we might of important meaning-making aspects of speech such as prosody, gaze, affect, and the ways speakers collaborate and negotiate with one another in interaction. This thoroughly revised and updated second edition looks to the future of the field, offering: A new chapter on assessment, discussing 'high stakes' oral language testing contexts such as immigration New material considering access to spoken data via the worldwide web and new technologies that allow neurolinguistic insights formerly hidden from view Summaries and case studies to help the reader understand how to approach researching speaking and encourages practitioners to question the models of speaking that they are using in their classrooms. Reviewing materials and assessment practices in the light of current knowledge about spoken language, and highlighting areas for new work and collaboration between researchers and practitioners, this book will be a valuable resource for anyone involved in language teaching.

Book Description
This study considers the possibility of introducing an element of more naturalistic, two-way interaction into the IELTS Speaking Test (IST). The research aimed to evaluate the effect of an intervention, namely the addition of a fourth part into the structure of the IST. This was intended as a two-minute section in which the candidate asked questions on a typical IST topic to the examiner, who then replied. Asking questions is a skill that university students have to develop, and such sequences could potentially provide useful rating data and a two-way interactional element. This four-part test was trialled by 18 candidates and three (3) examiners under six (6) conditions which enabled evaluation of the best format and location for the new part. The study evaluated whether candidate-led question-answer sequences are actually produced and whether value is added to the test in any way. The tests were recorded, transcribed and analysed using a CA approach. Both candidates and examiners were interviewed about the intervention. The new Candidate Question (CQ) part did generate candidate-led question-answer sequences as anticipated, even with weak candidates. The research suggests that the âexaminer leading statementâ format after the existing part 2 would be optimal. The CQ part does add value in a number of ways, according to both examiners and candidates, creating a context for more naturalistic, two-way interaction. Higher-scoring candidate. took a more active role, developing topic and making other kinds of speech moves outside the question-answer lockstep. Examiners felt that candidate questions provided useful extra information for rating purposes. Potential disadvantages are increased test duration and variation in amount and type of examiner talk. [Abstract].
