Category : Philosophy
Languages : en

2020 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title In this book, Philipp von Wussow argues that the philosophical project of Leo Strauss must be located in the intersection of culture, religion, and the political. Based on archival research on the philosophy of Strauss, von Wussow provides in-depth interpretations of key texts and their larger theoretical contexts. Presenting the necessary background in German-Jewish philosophy of the interwar period, von Wussow then offers detailed accounts and comprehensive interpretations of Strauss's early masterwork, Philosophy and Law, his wartime lecture "German Nihilism," the sources and the scope of Strauss's critique of modern "relativism," and a close commentary on the late text "Jerusalem and Athens." With its rare blend of close reading and larger perspectives, this book is valuable for students of political philosophy, continental thought, and twentieth-century Jewish philosophy alike. It is indispensable as a guide to Strauss's philosophical project, as well as to some of the most intricate details of his writings.

Beyond Bakelite

Beyond Bakelite PDF Author: Joris Mercelis
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262357984
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 379

Book Description
The changing relationships between science and industry in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, illustrated by the career of the “father of plastics.” The Belgian-born American chemist, inventor, and entrepreneur Leo Baekeland (1863–1944) is best known for his invention of the first synthetic plastic—his near-namesake Bakelite—which had applications ranging from electrical insulators to Art Deco jewelry. Toward the end of his career, Baekeland was called the “father of plastics”—given credit for the establishment of a sector to which many other researchers, inventors, and firms inside and outside the United States had also made significant contributions. In Beyond Bakelite, Joris Mercelis examines Baekeland's career, using it as a lens through which to view the changing relationships between science and industry on both sides of the Atlantic in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He gives special attention to the intellectual property strategies and scientific entrepreneurship of the period, making clear their relevance to contemporary concerns. Mercelis describes the growth of what he terms the “science-industry nexus” and the developing interdependence of science and industry. After examining Baekeland's emergence as a pragmatic innovator and leader in scientific circles, Mercelis analyzes Baekeland's international and domestic IP strategies and his efforts to reform the US patent system; his dual roles as scientist and industrialist; the importance of theoretical knowledge to the science-industry nexus; and the American Bakelite companies' research and development practices, technically oriented sales approach, and remuneration schemes. Mercelis argues that the expansion and transformation of the science-industry nexus shaped the careers and legacies of Baekeland and many of his contemporaries.

A Sacred People

A Sacred People PDF Author: Leo Killsback
Publisher: Plains Histories
ISBN: 9781682830352
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
(Volume 1 of 2) Killsback, a citizen of the Northern Cheyenne Nation, reconstructs and rekindles an ancient Cheyenne world--ways of living and thinking that became casualties of colonization and forced assimilation. Spanning more than a millennium of antiquity and recovering stories and ideas interpreted from a Cheyenne worldview, the works' joint purpose is rooted as much in a decolonization roadmap as it is in preservation of culture and identity for the next generations of Cheyenne people. Dividing the story of the Cheyenne Nation into pre- and post-contact, A Sacred People and A Sovereign People lay out indigenously conceived possibilities for employing traditional worldviews to replace unhealthy and dysfunctional ones bred of territorial, cultural, and psychological colonization.

Moon Power

Moon Power PDF Author: Simone Butler
Publisher: Quarto Publishing Group USA
ISBN: 1592338089
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 211

Book Description
“The phases of the moon hold enormous power and magic for living. Let Moon Power assist your journey.” —Christiane Northrup, MD, #1 New York Times–bestselling author There was a time when the feminine and her guiding light, the Moon, were all-powerful. Men were seen primarily as consorts to the Great Goddess, as embodied in every woman. In these peaceful, agrarian societies, primal feminine powers—intuition, emotion, sexuality, creation, communion with nature—were honored. And the moon, which waxed and waned in predictable cycles, was a symbol for the birth, growth, death, and renewal of life on Earth. Moon Power’s twelve chapters each represent a moon sign. The introduction describes what’s meant by Moon Power, provides some history about ancient moon worship, and explains why it went underground. The basics of moon phases and the meaning of new and full moons are explained. Simple rituals for connecting with the power of the moon are included. This book offers guidance on working with each sign as the moon passes through it (i.e. when the moon is in Aries, take assertive action, but watch impulsivity). Each chapter includes a profile of a powerful woman who typifies her lunar sign (Angelina Jolie, Aries Moon; Malala Yousafzai, Libra Moon). A Goddess and Power Animal for each moon sign and activities and rituals for connecting with their energy during certain moon phases are also provided. Moon Power will inspire women to recognize and develop their lunar nature. It will show them how, through reflection, ritual, and purposeful action, to understand their emotional nature and inner selves more deeply.
