Spin Electronics

Spin Electronics PDF Author: David D. Awschalom
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401705321
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 216

Book Description
The history of scientific research and technological development is replete with examples of breakthroughs that have advanced the frontiers of knowledge, but seldom does it record events that constitute paradigm shifts in broad areas of intellectual pursuit. One notable exception, however, is that of spin electronics (also called spintronics, magnetoelectronics or magnetronics), wherein information is carried by electron spin in addition to, or in place of, electron charge. It is now well established in scientific and engineering communities that Moore's Law, having been an excellent predictor of integrated circuit density and computer performance since the 1970s, now faces great challenges as the scale of electronic devices has been reduced to the level where quantum effects become significant factors in device operation. Electron spin is one such effect that offers the opportunity to continue the gains predicted by Moore's Law, by taking advantage of the confluence of magnetics and semiconductor electronics in the newly emerging discipline of spin electronics. From a fundamental viewpoine, spin-polarization transport in a material occurs when there is an imbalance of spin populations at the Fermi energy. In ferromagnetic metals this imbalance results from a shift in the energy states available to spin-up and spin-down electrons. In practical applications, a ferromagnetic metal may be used as a source of spin-polarized electronics to be injected into a semiconductor, a superconductor or a normal metal, or to tunnel through an insulating barrier.

Dietary Supplement Laboratory Quality Assurance Program

Dietary Supplement Laboratory Quality Assurance Program PDF Author: Melissa M. Phillips
Publisher: CreateSpace
ISBN: 9781500312664
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 90

Book Description
The NIST Dietary Supplement Laboratory Quality Assurance Program (DSQAP) was established in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) in 2007 to enable members of the dietary supplements community to improve the accuracy of measurements for demonstration of compliance with various regulations. Exercise I of this program offered the opportunity for laboratories to assess their in- house measurements of nutritional elements (Cr, Mo, and Se), contaminants (Cd), water-soluble vitamins (pantothenic acid), fat-soluble vitamins (retinol), and catechins in foods and/or botanical dietary supplement ingredients and finished products.

Corruption in Conflict

Corruption in Conflict PDF Author: John F. Sopko

Pages : 164

Book Description
This report examines how the U.S. government -- primarily the Departments of Defense (DOD), State, Treasury, and Justice (DOJ), and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) -- understood the risks of corruption in Afghanistan, how the U.S. response to corruption evolved, and the effectiveness of that response. The report identifies lessons to inform U.S. policies and actions at the onset of and throughout a contingency operation and makes recommendations for both legislative and executive branch action. This analysis reveals that corruption substantially undermined the U.S. mission in Afghanistan from the very beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom. It concludes that failure to effectively address the problem means that U.S. reconstruction programs, at best, will continue to be subverted by systemic corruption and, at worst, will fail. Patent Subject Matter Eligibility

Patent Subject Matter Eligibility PDF Author: Paul W. Browning
Publisher:

Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
Patentees file applications in more and more countries every year, with nearly four million PCT applications filed since the Patent Cooperation Treaty came into force in 1978. Yet prosecuting patents in different countries can be challenging. Each country has its own laws for pursuing patent applications and achieving enforceable patents, and local patent law varies widely on the issue of patent eligibility. This title explores patent-eligible subject matter across major jurisdictions and technologies. With succinct discussions of case law, patent office practices, and practical prosecution strategies, this guide is intended to help patent practitioners determine where to consider filing applications, the risks and benefits of certain claim types and language, and how to increase the strength of their clients' global patent portfolios. The varying case law and eligibility issues relating to electrical, computer, biological, pharmaceutical and chemical arts in a variety of jurisdictions will be covered, as well as relevant statistics and key topics such as the impact of new technology in this field.Written by experts in their respective jurisdictions, countries featured in this title include:China;the European Patent Office, including separate sections on France, Germany, and the United Kingdom;India;Japan; andthe United States.Knowing the prior art and having definite claim language is not always enough to obtain strong patent claims. It is therefore crucial to understand the differences in patent eligibility in different countries. With the costs necessary to file and prosecute a patent in each country, practitioners and patentees alike will appreciate this book to assist in understanding which types of applications have the best chance of success.
