Book Description
Excerpt from 1930 Spring Planting Book If seed germinates poorly, one must plant more seed or expect a thin stand. Small, shrunken seed will not produce vigorous plants. Weedy seed means the introduction into the field of plantain, dodder, thistle, mustard or some other pest, ready to take advantage of the fine fertile soil and undo the work of two years' preparation. Our alfalfa seed comes from the hardy sections of the North and Northwest, where it is subjected to the extremes of temperature. It is free of noxious weeds and conforms with the Nebraska and other state seed laws. In buying our alfalfa seed you can keep it ten days, test it anyway you wish, or have your county agent or experiment station test it. If not satisfactory, return it and we wil refund your money. Book Description
Excerpt from Spring Season 1930 There is a vast army of beautiful trees which shed their leaves in autumn. Among them are trees suitable for planting along streets and boundary lines, trees for woodlands and copses, for groves and for specimens, or merely to shade a corner of the back yard. Almost all of them are gorgeous where their leaves turn color in autumn and dis play an intricate and interesting pattern of bare branches against the winter sky. They should be carefully planted, about two inches deeper than they originally stood in the ground, and should be well watered the first season. Acer (maple) - The maples are too familiar to need much introduction. They are all splendid, round-headed trees, some of which are especially adapted to street planting, and all of them are de sirable as specimens. Long's Garden Book

Long's Garden Book PDF Author: J. D. Long Seed Company

Book Description
Excerpt from Long's Garden Book: Spring 1930 The kind of soil, its mechanical condition and fertility, is another important matter. Here again we have to work with the material at hand, as a foundation. Unfortunately, the soil near the average] house and just where you want your finest display of posies, is the 'worst on the premises. This because much of it has been placed there in excavating for the basement of the house. But there is nothing serious about all this. I've taken the most wornout and unpromising soil and brought it up to a high state of friability, fertility and productiveness. Takes some time, work and expense, to do a good job. If top soil is too light and sandy (which is seldom the trouble) you can improve it by having some stiff or clayey soil hauled in and mixed with it. If the reverse is the case (and more often it is), then you can subdue it and make it easier to handle, in several ways. If to be had get some very fine sand, or silt, and put this on your garden 3 to 6 inches deep. Then plow or spade it under and turn it up again and keep working it over and into the native soil. The beneficial effect will last for years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
