"The Turn of the Hand"

Author: Mary Moriarty
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443811971
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 140

Book Description
Recent decades have seen an enormous resurgence in the arts of memoir and life writing. Nowhere is this more true than in the case of Ireland and other postcolonial countries, where memoir has functioned to regenerate and re-present meaningful incidents and events in the pasts of particular individuals or cultural groups. This memoir, written by an “insider,” recalls the lives of various members of the Irish Traveller community during an era of enormous social and cultural change. The Irish Traveller community are a group whose history has often been forgotten, elided or relegated to the cultural margins. We currently live in an age of testimony, however, an era where first-hand accounts and personal experiences challenge us with respect to our suppositions regarding the past. It is only by engaging with memory and the stories which have gone before that we may become true custodians of our individual and communal identities. Books such as the The Turn of the Hand allow us to begin the process that is the “re-imagining” of our cultural histories and identities. In this manner we can preserve our cultural identity for future generations and come to a better understanding of what it means to be truly human.

Southern Queen

Book Description
New Orleans occupies a singular position within American life. Drawing deeply from Old World traditions and New World possibilities, the port city of the Mississippi has proved a lure to an extraordinary variety of travellers from its very earliest days. New Orleans has always been a world city like no other: it combines the magnolia and moonlight appeal of Southern romanticism, a popular sense of exoticism and decadence, the hint of illicit sex, and a cultural history without compare. However, alongside the glamour there runs another story - of tension, conflict, hardship and destruction. It was in the nineteenth century that the city's most distinctive characteristics were forged, and chapters will be based around signal moments that reveal the city's essential qualities: the Battle of New Orleans in 1815; the World's Fair in 1884; the establishment of Storyville in 1897. Whilst painting a portrait of the public face of New Orleans, the book will look behind the carnival mask to explore aspects of the city's history which have so often been kept hidden from view.

Missouri Marriages Before 1840 PDF Author:
Publisher: Genealogical Publishing Com
ISBN: 0806309857
Category : Genealogy
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
This amazing compilation contains the records of 16,000 marriages from fifty-one Missouri counties formed before 1840. The majority of the marriage records in this work were copied from the original marriage books on file in various county courthouses. Others were copied from previously published compilations; some were copied from both sources. All Missouri counties with marriage records prior to 1840 are covered except St. Louis County and City, which have been adequately covered elsewhere. The marriages listed here are arranged in alphabetical sequence by the surname of the groom. A bride's index at the back of the book contains the names of all 16,000 women mentioned in the marriage records.
