Book Description
“In the Statutes at Large and Revised Statutes of 1873 there are over 40,000 quarto pages. The lack of a practical quide to the innumerable subjects on which Congress had legislated since 1789 was felt by certain Members of the House and Senate in connections with their work of drafting and criticizing bills. During the last days of the session of Congress which ended June 30, 1906, the authors of the present volume proposed the preparation of an Index Analysis to the Federal Statutes. By an amendment made in the House to the sundry civil bill, the appropriation asked for to undertake the present experiment was provided. The volume of the Index Analysis covering the general and permanent law from 1873 to 1907 was published in 1908, under directions from Congress (34 Stat. L., 1399), to “expedite the preparation of that part of the new index to the Statutes at Large which is an index to the statutes enacted since the year 1873.” “

The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 8
Author: Thomas Jefferson
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 140084004X
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 833
Book Description
Volume Eight of the project documenting Thomas Jefferson's last years presents 591 documents dated from 1 October 1814 to 31 August 1815. Jefferson is overjoyed by American victories late in the War of 1812 and highly interested in the treaty negotiations that ultimately end the conflict. Following Congress's decision to purchase his library, he oversees the counting, packing, and transportation of his books to Washington. Jefferson uses most of the funds from the sale to pay old debts but spends some of the proceeds on new titles. He resigns from the presidency of the American Philosophical Society, revises draft chapters of Louis H. Girardin's history of Virginia, and advises William Wirt on revolutionary-era Stamp Act resolutions. Jefferson criticizes those who discuss politics from the pulpit, and he drafts a bill to transform the Albemarle Academy into Central College. Monticello visitors Francis W. Gilmer, Francis C. Gray, and George Ticknor describe the mountaintop and its inhabitants, and Gray's visit leads to an exchange with Jefferson about how many generations of white interbreeding it takes to clear Negro blood. Finally, although death takes his nephew Peter Carr and brother Randolph Jefferson, the marriage of his grandson Thomas Jefferson Randolph is a continuing source of great happiness. Some images inside the book are unavailable due to digital copyright restrictions.

Early Ohio Tax Records
Author:
Publisher: Genealogical Publishing Com
ISBN: 0806311290
Category : Ohio
Languages : en
Pages : 642
Book Description
This is the first collection of records the researcher should turn to in any genealogical investigation in the Buckeye State. Taking the place of pre-1820 census records, this work presents a county-by-county list of Ohio settlers and residents from about 1800 to 1825. Along with the 1801 tax list of the Virginia Military District, it contains the names of taxpayers listed in various county tax rolls, and it also contains lists of original proprietors and settlers (taken from other sources), names of holders of military warrants, voters' lists, householders' lists, occasional lists of Revolutionary soldiers, and lists of resident proprietors. The work is arranged by county, with multiple tax lists arranged chronologically thereunder. There is at least one tax list given for each of the seventy-five counties covered, the combined lists naming about 50,000 taxpayers. Each county tax list is accompanied by a brief history of the county's formation. Researchers should note that tax lists were not available for the following counties: Auglaize, Carroll, Erie, Fulton, Lake, Lucas, Noble, Ottawa, Paulding, Summit, Vinton, and Wyandot. Our reprint combines the original 1971 publication and the 1973 index, both first published by the Ohio Genealogical Society.

Surry County, North Carolina, Wills, 1771-1827
Author: Jo White Linn
Publisher: Genealogical Publishing Com
ISBN: 0806313463
Category : Surry County (N.C.)
Languages : en
Pages : 228
Book Description
Based on recorded wills and original wills at the North Carolina State Archives as well as "Loose Estate Papers" of intestates, these abstracts cover not only wills but powers of attorney, bonds, inventories, bills of sale, etc. Significantly, Surry County lay within the Granville Proprietary at its formation, and after Lord Granville's death in 1763 until 1778, the Proprietary land office did not reopen, making it very difficult--but for these will abstracts--for the present-day researcher to establish the residence of many individuals during that time period. What is more, as there are no extant marriage bonds for Surry County for the period 1771 to 1780, these will abstracts assume an importance out of all proportion to their customary value.
