Book Description
The Battle of Lake Erie on 10 September 1813 is considered by many to be the most important naval confrontation of the War of 1812. Made famous by the American fleet commander Oliver Hazard Perry's comment, "We have met the enemy and they are ours," the battle marked the U.S. Navy's first successful fleet action and was one of the rare occasions when the Royal Navy surrendered an entire squadron. This book draws on British, Canadian, and American documents to offer a totally impartial analysis of all sides of the struggle to control the lake. New diagrams of the battle are included that reflect the authors' modification of traditional positions of various vessels. The book also evaluates the strategic background and tactical conduct of the British and the Americans and the command leadership exercised by Perry and his British opponent, Commander Robert H. Barclay. Not since James Fenimore Cooper's 1843 book on the subject has the battle been examined in such detail, and not since Alfred Thayer Mahan's 1905 study of the war has there been such a significant reinterpretation of the engagement. First published in hardcover in 1997, the book is the winner of the North American Society for Oceanic History's John Lyman Book Award.

Book Description
"During the War of 1812 the U.S. Navy came of age. In fleet actions on the lakes and single ship engagements at sea, American men of war defeated Royal Navy ships of similar force. Naval officers such as Isaac Hull, Stephen Decatur, Oliver H. Perry, David Porter and Thomas Macdonough became heroes, and their ships, Constitution, United States, Niagara, Essex, and Saratoga, symbols for an American public proud of its navy. The three volumes will again call to mind the famous naval actions and events of our second war of independence with Great Britain"--Introduction.

The Memoirs of Sergeant Bourgogne (1812-1813)

The Memoirs of Sergeant Bourgogne (1812-1813) PDF Author: Sergeant Adrien Jean Baptiste François Bourgogne
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1908692316
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 298

Book Description
Considered by the majority of commentators to be the quintessential personal narrative of Napoleon’s disastrous 1812 campaign in Russia. The book charts the progress of the Grande Armée toward it’s apogee at the occupation of Moscow, followed by the great fire of Moscow and the looting of the city to the terrible retreat. During the retreat the full horror of the hunger, privation are vividly depicted, not only in Bourgogne’s own sufferings, but also those of his friends and countrymen. He stumbles through trials that proved too much for most those around him, whilst maintaining a haunting ability to describe the torments that try him. This account written partly in captivity in 1813, after capture at the battle of Dessau in 1813 and partly from letters he sent to his family during 1812, its historical significance and value cannot be over stated.

Book Description
"Memoirs of Sergeant Bourgogne, 1812-1813" by Adrien-Jean-Baptiste-François Bourgogne is an autobiographical tale that narrates the writer's time as a soldier in Napoleon's Imperial Guard. Bourgogne spares no details as he details the mundane and the action-packed, the wins and the catastrophic losses. Through his words, historians were and still are able to piece together an accurate depiction of life as a French soldier during his time.
