We Share the Same Sky

We Share the Same Sky PDF Author: Rachael Cerrotti
Publisher: Blackstone Publishing
ISBN: 1094153710
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 261

Book Description
In 2009, Rachael Cerrotti, a college student pursuing a career in photojournalism, asked her grandmother, Hana, if she could record her story. Rachael knew that her grandmother was a Holocaust survivor and the only one in her family alive at the end of the war. Rachael also knew that she survived because of the kindness of strangers. It wasn’t a secret. Hana spoke about her history publicly and regularly. But, Rachael wanted to document it as only a granddaughter could. So, that’s what they did: Hana talked and Rachael wrote. Upon Hana’s passing in 2010, Rachael discovered an incredible archive of her life. There were preserved albums and hundreds of photographs dating back to the 1920s. There were letters waiting to be translated, journals, diaries, deportation and immigration papers as well as creative writings from various stages of Hana’s life. Rachael digitized and organized it all, plucking it from the past and placing it into her present. Then, she began retracing her grandmother’s story, following her through Central Europe, Scandinavia, and across the United States. She tracked down the descendants of those who helped save her grandmother’s life during the war. Rachael went in pursuit of her grandmother’s memory to explore how the retelling of family stories becomes the history itself. We Share the Same Sky weaves together the stories of these two young women—Hana as a refugee who remains one step ahead of the Nazis at every turn, and Rachael, whose insatiable curiosity to touch the past guides her into the lives of countless strangers, bringing her love and tragic loss. Throughout the course of her twenties, Hana’s history becomes a guidebook for Rachael in how to live a life empowered by grief.

Genesis and the Moses Story

Genesis and the Moses Story PDF Author: Konrad Schmid
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 1575066033
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 471

Book Description
Konrad Schmid is a Swiss biblical scholar who belongs to a larger group of Continental researchers proposing new directions in the study of the Pentateuch. In this volume, a translation of his Erzväter und Exodus, Schmid argues that the ancestor tradition in Genesis and the Moses story in Exodus were two competing traditions of Israel’s origins and were not combined until the time of the Priestly Code—that is, the early Persian period. Schmid interacts with the long tradition of European scholarship on the Hebrew Bible but departs from some of the main tenets of the Documentary Hypothesis: he argues that the pre-Priestly material in both text blocks is literarily and theologically so divergent that their present linkage is more appropriately interpreted as the result of a secondary redaction than as thematic variation stemming from J’s oral prehistory. He dates Genesis–2 Kings to the Persian period and considers it a redactional work that, in its present shape, is a historical introduction to the message of future hope presented in the prophetic corpus of Isaiah-Malachi. Scholars and students alike will be pleased that this translation makes Schmid’s important work readily available in English, both for the contributions made by Schmid and the summary of continental interpretation that he presents. In this edition, some passages have been expanded or modified in order to clarify issues or to engage with more-recent scholarship. The notes and bibliography have also been updated. Dr. Schmid is Professor of Old Testament and Early Judaism at the University of Zürich.

What's Your Ministry?

What's Your Ministry? PDF Author: Carrie Lightfoot Shappell
Publisher: Elm Hill
ISBN: 1400327199
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 190

Book Description
What could a girl who has lived a “charmed life” possibly have to tell the world? She doesn’t really have a story, right? Carrie Lightfoot Shappell is fully aware that even in this “charmed life” she would have nothing without God’s love, His sacrifice, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Psalms 96:3, David tells us to, “Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.” So, what does that mean? As Christians, we all have a story that we can share! Sometimes we forget this truth and we fail to see that God meets us exactly where we are. We miss out on opportunities to tell His good news, no matter where we are or what we have/haven’t experienced. We all have a purpose! We just need to believe this and be willing to slow down, in order to embrace and live out His plan. Throughout the past 40 years, God has given Carrie insightful perspectives in life’s successes and in life’s challenges/failures. God is not finished yet. Carrie has opened her heart to His calling, and He has commissioned her to share with the world what she has learned so far. We all have a ministry, and we can live it every single day. It doesn’t have to be a ministry within the church because we are given opportunities to be His hands and feet in our schools, our workplaces, and our communities. God has given us gifts to use in order to help others know His love and to help build His kingdom here on Earth. Our gift back is being “all in” for God and using those gifts to glorify Him. In What’s Your Ministry: 13 Ways to Be “All In”, Carrie guides her readers through parts of her personal journey to share what God has shown her throughout life. At the same time, she challenges readers to be “all in” for God. This book, which intertwines a real- life story of finding her ministry with 13 steps to being “all in,” provides readers with the following: Examples of scripture Practical ways to live intentionally for God Activities for reflection Are you “all in?” What’s your ministry?
