Book Description
Plant nutrients that are contained in both manure and chemical fertilizers are essential to a farm operation. When applied in proper quantities and at appropriate times, the nutrients will aid in achieving optimum crop yields. A nutrient management plan matches the nutrients available in manure and commercial fertilizer to nutrients required by the crop. This document outlines 10 steps needed to develop a plan.

Pages : 448

Book Description
The majority of meat, milk, and eggs consumed in the United States are produced in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO). With concentrated animal operations, in turn comes concentrated manure accumulation, which can pose a threat of contamination of air, soil, and water if improperly managed. Animal Manure: Production, Characteristics, Environmental Concerns, and Management navigates these important environmental concerns while detailing opportunities for environmentally and economically beneficial utilization.

Manure Management for Water Quality

Manure Management for Water Quality PDF Author: Marc Ribaudo
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 9781422317693
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 98

Book Description
Nutrients from livestock & poultry manure are key sources of water pollution. Ever-growing numbers of animals per farm & per acre have increased the risk of water pollution. New Clean Water Act regulations compel the large confined animal producers to meet nutrient application standards when applying manure to the land, & USDA encourages all animal feeding operations to do the same. The additional costs for managing manure (such as hauling manure off the farm) have implications for feedgrain producers & consumers as well. This report¿s farm level analysis examines onfarm technical choice & producer costs across major U.S. production areas for hauling manure to the minimum amount of land needed to assimilate manure nutrients. Intensive Agriculture and Sustainability

Intensive Agriculture and Sustainability PDF Author: Glen C. Filson
Publisher: UBC Press
ISBN: 9780774811057
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 262

Book Description
As globalization restructures agriculture and rural communities, the impacts of increasingly industrialized farming make interdisciplinary analyses of the linkages among the social, environmental, and economic aspects of farming ever more vital. This collection analyzes the reasons for the public’s scrutiny of intensive agriculture and the prospects for sustainable farming now that concerns are mounting about food quality, manure runoff, greenhouse gases, extra-label use of antibiotics, pesticide use, and rural conflict. Intensive Agriculture and Sustainability outlines the advantages of Farming Systems Analysis for understanding the implications of modern, intensive agriculture. This book describes some of the major environmental and social problems connected with intensive farming; outlines a framework for analyzing its sustainability; discusses key linkages among the environmental, economic, and social indicators; outlines modelling trade-offs between profitability and environmental sustainability; and then analyzes various farming systems using case studies. The authors conclude that rural conflict and government regulation are likely to continue unless the public joins with farmers to help fund stewardship practices and stabilize farm incomes. This book will appeal to field practitioners, agricultural and environmental policy analysts, geographers, and those scholars and students who are tired of the pervasive production-oriented disciplinary focus that typifies most agricultural research.

CLEANEAST™ comprehensive environmental assessment tool for livestock and poultry farms

CLEANEAST™ comprehensive environmental assessment tool for livestock and poultry farms PDF Author: Marion Elliott Deerhake
Publisher: RTI Press
ISBN:
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 18

Book Description
RTI’s Environmental Assessment (EA) Tool enables livestock and poultry farmers to evaluate their operations for environmental challenges and identify practical ways to address those challenges. Between 2007 and 2011, the Comprehensive Livestock Environmental Assessment and Nutrient Management Planning (CLEANEAST™) Project provided confidential, no-cost EAs and nutrient management planning (NMP) assistance to more than 400 livestock and poultry operations. During 2007 and 2008, RTI, our sub-agreement partner, North Carolina State University, and subcontractor, Agri-Waste Technology, Inc., designed the EA Tool, which contains over 400 questions in 12 topical areas. We pilot tested the EA Tool at two livestock operations before full-scale application. We used the EA Tool at more than 290 livestock and poultry operations in 20 states east of the Mississippi River. In total, operators received 385 EA-related recommendations for improving on-farm, environmentally related practices. We used our results to inform both livestock and poultry sectors, as well as the US Department of Agriculture and US EPA, of nutrient management practices observed; to predict potential environmental releases from technologies and practices; to measure adoption rates of recommendations, technologies, and practices; to evaluate behavioral response to outreach; and to identify future needs for water and air quality program improvements and policy. The EA Tool remains in the public domain, and as interest grows in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate variability, the EA Tool can be readily expanded to inform farmers about their emissions from manure management and guide them in obtaining carbon credits for mitigation measures.
